GSMA awareness campaign 'a move against WiMax'

According to Steven Hartley, a senior analyst at business telecoms consultant Ovum, the $1 billion (£565 million) marketing campaign will see 16 companies mark their HSPA (high-speed packet access) mobile broadband-ready devices.He explained in a statement that the move is essentially an awareness campaign that aims to increase the uptake of mobile broadband services on laptops and mobile internet devices."Yet, mobile-broadband uptake is already growing rapidly without it," Mr Hartley went on. "It could be argued that any promotion is better than nothing, but it looks a lot like the initiative is designed as a defensive move against WiMax branding."read more

News brought to you by Primus; Business VoIP specialists.Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are finding it difficult to protect themselves from the latest internet threats because vendors are holding them back, it has been suggested.According to experts at the recent Gartner IT Security Summit 2008, IT vendors are not investing enough into the research and development of solutions to target new threats.Computing.co.uk reports that Neil MacDonald, research vice-president at the analyst, also derided vendors for failing to support the latest security standards for information sharing."There are too many unconnected point products with too much complexity," the technology website reported him as saying. "Information security must become adaptive… but vendors are holding us back."read more
