Obama win 'good news for global VoIP market'
Thursday, Nov 20, 2008, Filed under: Telecoms News
Barack Obama's recent victory in the US presidential election will serve to boost the already-booming global VoIP market, one expert has claimed.

According to legal and telecommunications expert Andrew D Lipman of Washington DC-based Bingham McCutchen LLP, the forthcoming US administration looks set to place greater emphasis on hosted telecoms solutions such as VoIP as it attempts to improve efficiency within the public sector.

Commenting on the potential impact of the Obama presidency both at home and abroad, Mr Lipman told TMC.net that changes are likely in four major areas: "First, greater FCC appreciation of VoIP. Second, better carrier interconnection rights. Third, recognition among policy-makers that the telecom world is evolving to VoIP.

"And finally, fostering of VoIP technology ubiquitously to rural and remote areas and to low-income users."

These comments come as the European Union looks into alleged cases of VoIP calls being blocked across some parts of the continent.
