Broadband subscriptions 'remain strong'
Monday Oct 27, 2008 filed under : Telecoms News

The increasing popularity of online applications and internet video is encouraging businesses all over the world to adopt new broadband subscriber lines, it has been revealed.

According to a report from In-Stat, more than 80 million new broadband subscriptions were signed in the last 12 months

Some of these could be accounted by companies upgrading to a faster line to improve the quality of their hosted business telecoms.

The analyst learned that fixed digital subscriber lines (DSL) are still the most popular mode of broadband, accounting for 55 per cent of all new lines.

Mike Paxton, analyst at In-Stat, explained that growing demand for online services was driving adoption of "fatter pipes".

In September 2008, there were 452 million broadband subscribers around the world - a figure that the research company predicts will rise to 876 million by 2012.

It also noted that DSL, cable modem and mobile wireless services accounted for 93 per cent of all global broadband access at the beginning of the year.

Earlier this month, network perimeter tester NTA Monitor urged businesses to ensure that they properly configure their systems when installing VoIP, or risk exposing themselves to security threats.
