| Demand for super-fast broadband 'dependant on work demand' |
| Thursday Nov 13, 2008 filed under : Telecoms News |
Demand for next-generation networks will only be strong in the UK if super-fast broadband becomes integral to work life, it has been suggested.
According to the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee (Pitcom), the roll-out of fibre optic networks is currently being delayed because infrastructure providers want to wait for application providers, but they will not build programs until the infrastructure is in place.
Speaking at the Westminster eForum keynote seminar, Nick Palmer, an MP and member of Pitcom, explained: "We need to try and get to the point where it's an important part of people's work and where communities evolve again, in the same way that they began demanding broadband."
Mr Palmer added that it is down to the government to provide leadership at this time, in the same way as they would for a new road or rail network project.
The seminar took place on November 6th, and provided the industry with a chance to discuss where the funding for the estimated £15 billion next-generation broadband network will come from.
