Fixed broadband 'accelerating away' from mobile
Friday Oct 31, 2008 filed under : Telecoms News

The gulf between mobile and fixed broadband speeds is expanding, according to new research which suggests that wired broadband is now twice as fast on average.

The speed tests, conducted by Broadband Expert, revealed that the average fixed broadband connection speed to be 3.61Mbps, while mobile broadband clocked in at 1.57Mpbs.

The most striking thing about these results is that broadband services are now 0.66Mpbs faster on average than they were in February, but mobile broadband has sped up by just 0.1Mbps since April.

William Harvey, technical director at Broadband Expert, explained that mobile broadband can provide speeds of up to 7.2Mbps in areas with good 3G coverage.

"Where no 3G coverage is available mobile broadband services rely on the much slower 2G network hence the area in which you use your mobile broadband connection can have a huge impact on the speeds achievable," he added.

Despite growing broadband speeds, research company Screen Digest warned recently that customers could suffer from less choice in the market as smaller suppliers struggle to remain profitable in the face of competitive pricing and higher bandwidth costs.
