| GSMA awareness campaign 'a move against WiMax' |
| Monday Oct 06, 2008 filed under : Telecoms News |
The launch of a new GSMA-led mobile broadband awareness campaign was primarily a defensive move against competing WiMax technology, an expert has claimed.
According to Steven Hartley, a senior analyst at business telecoms consultant Ovum, the $1 billion (£565 million) marketing campaign will see 16 companies mark their HSPA (high-speed packet access) mobile broadband-ready devices.
He explained in a statement that the move is essentially an awareness campaign that aims to increase the uptake of mobile broadband services on laptops and mobile internet devices.
"Yet, mobile-broadband uptake is already growing rapidly without it," Mr Hartley went on. "It could be argued that any promotion is better than nothing, but it looks a lot like the initiative is designed as a defensive move against WiMax branding."
Recently, analyst Gartner revealed that more than 32.2 million smartphones were sold around the world in the second quarter of 2008 - a 15.7 per cent increase year-over-year - with popularity being driven by the improved telecommunications functionality.
