| Mobile broadband 'encourages' femtocell uptake |
| Thursday Oct 30, 2008 filed under : Telecoms News |
As mobile broadband becomes more common, a growing number of small and medium-sized enterprises will find themselves subscribing to femtocell services.
That is according to a new report by Infonetics, which suggests that high-speed packet access (HSPA), a next-generation mobile broadband technology, will be a key driver behind increased enterprise adoption of femtocells.
Femtocells are mini-base stations that boost the strength of mobile signals inside buildings. They allow businesses to enjoy a greater deal of convergence between their fixed and mobile business telecoms strategies by extending wireless coverage indoors.
Infonetics' directing analyst for mobile devices, Richard Webb, predicted that wider availability of HSPA technology will provide mobile broadband adoption and - in turn - femtocell subscriptions with an "extra push".
He suggested that femtocells "could be seen as a 'recession-buster' deal", allowing businesses and consumers to reduce the cost of their mobile voice calls - something that could result in decent early market growth for base-station shipments, despite the morose economic atmosphere.
In other news, broadband supplier Sandvine has claimed that new online telecommunications tools - such as business VoIP and social networks - are transforming the ways in which people use the internet.
