| VoIP jargon 'can be confusing' |
| Friday Nov 07, 2008 filed under : VoIP News |
Businesses can benefit massively from the range of low-cost, high-capability features that VoIP systems provide, but the jargon of business telecoms can often be off-putting.
That is according to Michelle Robart, editor of TMCnet.com, who explained that small firms need to understand the language of VoIP if they are to better identify the type of service that best suits their needs.
The VoIP expert wrote on the site that it can be a big help understanding the "common terms" used by providers and vendors.
She explained that bandwidth is the largest amount of data that can be transmitted across a network from one place to another, while IP audio conferencing allows people to communicate with one another via the internet.
Ms Robart urged small firms interested in VoIP to also read up on SIP - a protocol for internet telephony - and PBX (private branch exchange) - a platform for connecting a firm's private VoIP network to the outside world - if they are to be properly prepared.
"With the long list of acronyms and terms used to describe business VoIP, decoding this other language may seem like a daunting task," she added.
Recently, managed network services provider Bandwidth.com claimed that VoIP solutions can save small companies up to 50 per cent on their telecommunications costs.
