| Voice remains 'lifeblood' of SME communications |
| Tuesday Nov 04, 2008 filed under : VoIP News |
Despite the massive popularity of email, instant messaging and other data-based business telecoms solutions, voice is still the "communication lifeblood" for many smaller firms, it has been claimed.
According to Processor magazine, the importance of voice-based telecommunications makes it crucial that VoIP implementations remain trouble-free.
The publication claimed that IP voice streams are extremely susceptible to network congestion, something that can lead to moments of silence or stuttering over a converged network.
Scott Kinka, senior vice-president of unified communications specialist Evolve IP, told Processor that the most common factors adversely affecting VoIP on converged networks are latency - the time it takes the voice signal to travel across the network - and data loss.
"To avoid the problems of jitter, packet loss, and delay, a thorough network assessment should be performed to ensure there is sufficient bandwidth," he advised.
"Always give precedence to voice packets on the network for timely delivery."
Recently, network perimeter testing specialist NTA Monitor also highlighted the importance of proper configuration of VoIP networks. It warned that businesses with poorly maintained systems could be open to a variety of security threats.
